Dalhousie Pain Day and Strategic Planning Meeting
May 3 & 4, 2013
All researchers, clinicians, and trainees currently engaged pain research and/or practice are invited to attend and present a poster describing their current pain related research. This is an opportunity for researchers, clinicians, and trainees to share their work with colleagues. Poster prizes will be awarded for trainees. As well there will be a plenary lecture titled, “Individual Differences in Responses to Pain and Its Treatment: Implications for Personalized Pain Management” by Dr. Roger Fillingim, University of Florida, who is the current President of the American Pain Society and a recognized international expert in the study of biological, social, and psychological factors that may influence the experience of pain, including sex and ethnic differences.

NS Food Gathering

The NS Food Gathering will bring together eaters, farmers, researchers, nutritionists, civil servants, students, cooks, citizens, gardeners, and parents from across the province to identify and animate actions to increase food security in Nova Scotia.
The NS Food Gathering is a project of FoodARC and the Nova Scotia Food Security Network with participation from numerous food organizations across the province including Farmers' Markets of Nova Scotia, SlowFood, the Nova Scotia Food Policy Council, and the Food Action Committee.

IHRTP Graduate Student Research Day 2013

All graduate students currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, or Health Professions are invited to present their research with a poster or platform presentation. Graduate students in other faculties are welcome to participate, if the research can be connected to health research in some way.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to formally present their research in poster or platform format, to a panel of judges, in order to improve presentation style and content through expert feedback while finding out about other research is happening in the community.

This program is open to all students in the Faculties of Medicine, the Health Professions and Dentistry. With leadership and guidance from the Global Health Office, students will fulfill self-directed program modules over two (2) years in the areas of:
- Knowledge
- Professional Development
- Public Engagement
Participants will attend “Skill Building Sessions”; workshops that focus on contextualizing global health education and learning. Students will develop a deep understanding of health inequity, as well as the political, cultural, economic and social factors that contribute to poor health.

2013 Canadian Disaster and Humanitarian Response Training Program
May 8 - 19, 2013
The 2013 Canadian Disaster and Humanitarian Response Training Program will provide interested medical students, residents, public health students, other graduate-level students with relevant backgrounds, mid-career professionals and humanitarian workers with the globally-recognized competencies relevant to humanitarian work. The program will include both in-classroom learning as well as participation in a 3-day Field Simulation at the Koffler Scientific Reserve. Content for this program will be informed by expert practitioners and organizations working in the field.

Scientific Day 2013: Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders

MSF Scientific Day 2013 will feature keynote speech by international health expert, co-founder of the Gapminder Foundation and TED talks alumnus Hans Rosling on the synergy and conflict between research and advocacy. Abstracts involving treatment in conflict and emergency settings, new approaches to preventing malaria in Mali and Chad, cholera vaccination in an outbreak in Guinea, and preventing malnutrition in Niger by cash transfer and food supplementation will be discussed as well. Finally, there will be a panel discussion on the impact of MSF research.

Sustainable development through global action: The case for investing in mental health
We would like to invite you to attend our inaugural Global Mental Health Forum, hosted by the Centre for Global Mental Health (a joint initiative of King’s Health Partners and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine). This forum aims to encourage the sharing of evidence and experience to strengthen the case for greater investment in mental health research and services around the world– especially in low and middle income countries.
Forum topics include:

- scaling-up
- evaluation
- consumer experiences of care
- mental health policies and plans
- financing mental health

Peace Research Opportunity for Medical Students (PROMS)

The aim of the Peace Research Opportunity for Medical Students (PROMS) is to enable
students to conduct research under the supervision of an expert Medical Peace Practitioner/Mentor. The
program is intended to foster an appreciation for, and proficiency with, the research process as well as
understanding of Peace Issues. A maximum of two awards will be given each summer with a maximum
value of $2500 each.
Undergraduate medical students currently enrolled in any year of medical school in Canada

Colour Outside the Lines: A Reverse Innovation Challenge for Canadian Health Systems

Colour Outside the Lines invites Canadians to submit innovations from emerging markets that have the potential to improve our health systems. The Challenge is open for submissions until May 31, following which an interdisciplinary committee will choose three winning submissions. First place will receive $50,000, and second and third will each receive $25,000, to be used towards the development and application of their reverse innovation idea. The winners will be profiled at Western University’s Global Health Conference 2013 on November 26th, which will be themed on reverse innovation.

Global Health Summer School
Summer 2013
The University of Oxford Department of Public Health and the Department of Continuing Education present a one-week Summer School designed to introduce participants to topics central to current global health research and to provide an understanding of the principles, methods and practice of global health.
The Summer School consists of three units spread over five days, with participants attending all three units. Each day will begin with a key plenary session on a global health topic, following which participants will cover each of the following:

Leadership in Mental Health Course
